Our History

Pre
1900Located at the highest crossing on Lincolnshire Wolds the site of Jim’s Yard has long been a place of quiet significance. The crossing, established on an ancient track-way linking the market towns of Caistor and Horncastle, is thought to date back to the Bronze age. A barrow (or burial mound) from the era can be clearly see a few hundred yards away.
The site, situated at the top of Bully Hill, also has an industrial tail to tell. Beneath the hill is a vast aquifer (underground reservoir) from which pours forth the source of the River Rase. In 1086 the Domesday Book recorded a dozen working water mills on the Rase beneth Bully Hill. At the time it was mainly corn being milled however by the 18th century paper was the areas main export. The road running west from Bully Hill still bears the name Paper Mill Lane. -
1970
Bully Hill’s location has always made it an important waypoint. This continued into the 20th century when it was the site of a cafe where wandering motorists could stop for tea and cake. By the 1980’s refreshment was joined by recuperation with the opening of Lincolnshire’s highest guest house, Wold View Bed & Breakfast. Still there to this day it’s as well placed as ever to provide respite from the road with commanding views of the Wolds, Lincoln, and the Trent Valley.

2000
So it was here in this lofty East Anglian oasis that Jim’s Yard first sprang into existence. Local woodsman Jim Kendall first came to Bully Hill in 2000 where he quickly chopped, carved, and grafted out an existence in ‘the tree game’. At the same time Jim began to indulged his other passion; Hoarding. For 9 years every conceivable type of raw material and reclaim was brought back to the yard. Timber, local stone, ironmongery, furniture, tiles, cobbles, the lot. “He’d have had Hadrian’s Wall if it would have gone in the back of the van” or so the saying went. Finally in the summer of 2009 the old sheds came down and the footings were dug. Jim’s vision of a reclaimed retail outlet and work space were about to take form.

2010
Many people remember the winter of 2010 but the brickys and craftsmen working on the build remember it better than most. The UK recorded all time record low temperatures for December. Up on Wolds it was even colder. Hot tea froze in the mug, while gas heaters were used to thaw the bricks before they could be laid.

2013

Eco-conscious from conception to operation the site is service by a high efficiency biomass boil fed with by-product wood from Lincolnshire Tree Services. At the same time all secondary water needs are met by a rain water harvesting system.
